AWD EF Civic Build – A Classic Honda, Reimagined

Some builds are about chasing records. Some are about nostalgia.
This one? It’s about taking everything great about the EF Civic and making it better.
For over three decades, the 1988-1991 Honda Civic (EF chassis) has been a platform for enthusiasts looking to squeeze out every ounce of performance from a lightweight, well-engineered chassis. Whether it was B-swapped, K-swapped, or boosted, the formula was always the same: power + lightweight = fun.
But there’s always been one challenge when building high-powered front-wheel-drive Hondas: traction.
That’s where this build comes in. The goal isn’t to build the fastest EF ever—there are plenty of record-breaking Civics out there. Instead, this is about building a well-rounded, high-performance street car that can handle real-world conditions while still staying true to the EF’s raw, engaging driving experience.
Why AWD?
Front-wheel drive has always been a strength and a limitation for old-school Hondas. With good tires and the right setup, FWD cars can put down serious power, but as horsepower increases, the battle for traction becomes harder to win.
The solution? All-wheel drive.
This build takes Honda’s already well-balanced EF chassis and enhances it with AWD, not just for better launches, but for an entirely different driving experience. With more grip in all conditions, the car becomes more stable at speed, more confidence-inspiring in corners, and more planted under power.
What AWD brings to this build:
✔ More stability – The car feels more planted, even at high speeds.
✔ More usable power – No more fighting torque steer or wheelspin.
✔ More control in real-world conditions – Better handling on rough roads or variable surfaces.
This isn’t just a power mod—it’s a drivability upgrade.
The Powertrain Setup
At the heart of the build is a turbocharged K24, a proven Honda platform known for making big power while staying reliable. But instead of just going for big dyno numbers, the focus is on making that power usable and controllable.
✔ Engine: K24 – Strong, reliable, and packed with torque.
✔ Turbo: Precision 6266 – Big power, responsive spool, and room to grow.
✔ Drivetrain: Custom AWD conversion – Grip, balance, and next-level acceleration.
✔ Exhaust: 3.5-inch stainless system with Valvetronic control – Quiet when needed, aggressive on command.
The AWD system isn’t just about straight-line speed—it transforms the entire feel of the car, giving it a level of grip and confidence that’s hard to match in a traditional FWD Civic.
Suspension: A Custom-Tuned Setup by Fortune Auto
A drivetrain swap like this isn’t just about adding power and traction—it completely changes the way the car handles. The rear suspension geometry is entirely different with AWD trailing arms, and off-the-shelf coilovers weren’t going to cut it.
That’s where Fortune Auto stepped in.
They developed a completely custom coilover setup specifically for this car, designed to work seamlessly with the AWD rear trailing arms. Everything was built to spec for the unique balance of this setup:
✔ Custom Spring Rates – Dialed in for the weight shift and AWD handling characteristics.
✔ Custom Valving – Optimized for the new weight distribution and power delivery.
✔ Custom Shock Body Lengths – Ensuring proper suspension travel with the AWD trailing arms.
This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” suspension—it’s been engineered for this exact build, meaning the car won’t just be fast, but also predictable, stable, and fun to drive.

What’s Next?
This is still a work in progress, and there’s always room for refinement.
The next steps are focused on fine-tuning the driving experience and ensuring the AWD system works as seamlessly as possible.
🚀 What’s next on the list?
✔ Dialing in power delivery to make sure the AWD system puts the power down smoothly.
✔ Refining the suspension setup to perfect handling and ride quality.
✔ Road and track testing to see where adjustments can be made.
At the end of the day, this is still an EF Civic at heart—lightweight, fun, and built for drivers who love to tinker and push the limits of what’s possible with Honda’s golden era of engineering.
The AWD EF is Coming Together – Stay Tuned
This build isn’t about breaking records—it’s about building something that feels right, drives right, and makes power in a way that’s usable on the street.
If you love old-school Hondas, AWD conversions, or just seeing a different take on an EF build, keep an eye on this project.
